First: what actually survives a rave

Most rave wear is bought on looks alone, and most of it fails on the same three things. Learn these and you'll buy better anywhere.

• Sweat. You will be drenched. Anything that goes see-through, sags or itches when wet is out by 11pm.
• Movement. Arms up, jumping, dancing for hours. If it rides up in the changeroom, it will be around your ribs by the second set.
• Straps and closures. Thin elastic and flimsy clasps are the number one cause of the toilet-cubicle emergency repair. Wide straps, proper stitching, no exceptions.

Sparkle is the easy part. Sparkle that stays on the garment and not on the dance floor is the hard part.

Buying online from an Australian label

The fastest route, and usually the best value. Local shipping means you're not waiting three weeks or gambling on international sizing charts. The catch is fit — you're guessing until it arrives.

Ways to reduce the guess: measure yourself properly rather than going by your usual dress size, check whether the brand publishes actual garment measurements or just S/M/L, and look for photos on more than one body type. If a brand only shows one size on one model, you're not being given enough information.

Vintage, op shops and DIY

Brunswick, Fitzroy and Preston are the traditional hunting grounds, and if you enjoy the hunt it's genuinely the most fun way to build an outfit. You'll find sequins, mesh, old dancewear and a lot of things nobody else will be wearing. Bring time and patience — you're not going in with a shopping list, you're going in to see what turns up. Pair with a decent base layer and you've got a look nobody can copy.

This is the bit most people don't realise they can do. If you're anywhere around Narre Warren, Berwick, Dandenong, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Officer, Clyde, Hampton Park or Frankston, our Hallam studio is a short drive and you can put things on before you buy them.

It's a working sewing factory as well as a shop, which means two useful things. First, there's a pole in the middle of the floor, so you can move properly in an outfit instead of standing still in a cubicle wondering. Second, if the fit is nearly right, the machines are right there — we can often alter it while you wait.

Festival versus club night — dress differently

A Melbourne festival is outdoors, long, and the weather will change its mind at least twice. You want sun coverage you can strip back, shoes you can genuinely stand in for eight hours, and something that still looks good with a jacket over it at 9pm.
