Pole Files Interview 39: Karry Summers Pole Dancer

Karry Summers rarrdesigns

Interview 39 is with New Zealander Karry Summers, over the last year she has become one of the top Pole dancers.

Her Gymnastics background gives her a creative edge, we love her style………. Enjoy reading and watching her videos………

Quick Bio on yourself…..
I grew up competing in gymnastics and always loved the dance and artistry side of the sport. Finding pole gave me a chance to express that side of myself more than I ever could as a gymnast and yet still throw myself upside down and around. I started pole in UK and when I moved back to New Zealand I opened up my own dance studio, Altitude Pole. Over the past years I have been getting into bigger and bigger competitions, until last year I placed 2nd at the Pole World Cup in Rio and 4th at World Champs in Zurich. I have loved all the experiences I have gotten to have because of pole and love the passion people all over the world have for it.

How long have you been doing pole dancing?

I have been Pole Dancing for a little over two years now. I started dancing January 2011 at Studio Soiree in Salt Lake City Utah.

The moment you realized you love pole dancing?

The moment I touched it! 😀 I was addicted, my first class was an Intermediate/ Advanced level class with Lorinda Kay as my instructor and it kicked my ass! After that I was hooked- you couldn’t pry me off it.  I was black and blue everywhere with little to no skin left and loved every second!

Describe your style.

I usually perform a more carefree style, and I just focus on the fun of pole. I like to push my limits and break out of my comfort zone every now and then. My favorite style is tricksy and daredevilish!

Favorite move?

OOOH I have lots! There are always new moves that I want to learn and want to master, and the hardest ones that take the most effort are usually my favorite! I love drops!

I do have to say I love my two signature moves, the contorted remi-bridge, and the reverse rainbow (swan).

Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?

Chicken! Lol!! (I eat a lot of chicken)

Dry Hands, Dew Point, fun pole clothes (yay Bad Kitty), and danceable music!

Growing up I wanted to be a…..

Heart Surgeon! I was always fascinated by the human heart and loved learning anatomy.

My knowledge of anatomy has actually helped me a ton in learning and teaching pole and contortion. I like knowing what muscles I am using, stretching, the way they all work together, and how to access their strength.

You would not know it but Joanna is 43 year old, so lets hear about Joanna and her pole dancing career…….

How long have you been doing pole dancing?

I started classes at Bobbi’s after watching a friend compete in MPD in 2008, so about 4 ½ years ago, just before I turned 40

The moment you realised you love pole dancing?

When I did my first show (comp) and, as well as the performing,

loved the whole experience of training, choreographing and the losing track of time that comes with playing with new tricks and putting together new combinations.

Joanna Littlewood-Johnson pole files rarrdesign

Describe your style.

My style is based on dance, strength moves, leg flexibility and I hope my performances express my love of pole and dancing. I try to adapt my style and choreography to suit the music I have chosen. I prefer dancing barefoot because there are so many tricks and dance styles (I love big jumps) that are easier without shoes, but I also love to put on my heels occasionally.

[youtube_sc url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU0n_z1kNt4″]

Favorite move?

No particular favourite, but I love trying different splits, dynamic moves like leaps onto the pole and I’ve been working on Jenyne’s iguana walk.

Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?

My iPhone to film myself as I train on my own in my loungeroom. Grip aids – Always Dry Hands and dew point or shaving gel, depending on the type of pole

Any hobbies or passions outside of pole dancing?

My kids – I have two handsome, brilliant boys that I adore, although they keep me busy with all their out of school activities (mum’s taxi service … lol)
Pilates – I have been running my own studio for 10 years.

Being busy, goals and challenges, stretching, my foam rollers, Bakballs and supply of massage balls, my boys, sunny days, dancing

Pole Files Interview 36: Kristy Sellars Pole Dancer

The next pole files interview is with the current Miss Pole Dance Victoria, Kristy Sellars. Kristy is an amazing performer, I had the privilege to watch her perform at Miss Pole Dance Victoria competition. Kristy has the ability to capture the audience with her amazing choreography and theatre mixes.

Her Miss Pole Dance Victoria video is a must to watch, Kristy transforms into a air hostess and finishes the performance with a show stopping light up bra!!!!

So lets hear all about Kristy…………

Kristy Sellars started her professional dance career in 2003, she has since then worked in Australia and overseas choreographing and dancing in live shows, music videos and TV series such as So You Think You Can Dance.
She started pole dancing in 2007 and quickly became addicted. In 2009 she competed in her first ever professional competition Miss Pole Dance Victoria. She then went on to place second runner up the following year and receive a wild card entry to Miss Pole Dance Australia where she wowed the crowd with her creative Pirates of the Carribean performance.
After taking a year off competing to have a baby, Kristy returned to perform at Encore Sydney Pole Show with unique pole interpretation of a psychotic mental patient. Later that month she competed once again in Miss Pole Dance Victoria and took out the title!
She then choreographed 4 pieces, and performed in 2 of them for Encore 2013 including ‘Train’, which showcased the talents of some of the top pole performers in the co

untry in a unique and fun routine.
Kristy is thrilled to be running the Victorian Pole Championships this year in May, and in June she will tour the US to teach, and will be performing at ‘Girl Next Door’ and the ‘International Pole Convention 2013’.

Almost 6 years but was not really training properly for a year around the time I had my baby Rylie  She’s 18 months old now.

[youtube_sc url=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN5rGCeSdGo”]

The moment you realised you love pole dancing?
After the very first class I did! I got in the car and put my drink bottle between my legs because the skin was so sore, and all I could think was ‘this is so painful but I’m so coming back next week’! haha

Describe your style
My background is in all types of dance so I guess that’s what I do on the pole. I like to do as many different types of performances as I can… keep surprising people

Kristy Sellars Pole files rarrdesigns

Favorite move?
That’s a ‘tricky’ question  I guess the move I’ve always loved training and creating different variations of is the shoulder mount. There’s so much you can do with it ie: The Sellars Bomb! and the walk down!

Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?
I use tite grip and then a little bit of itac, as well as jogging on the spot and holding a plank right before I go on stage so I’m just a little bit warm/sweaty so I can grip to the pole easier.

Kristy Sellars Pole files rarrdesigns

Family  love watching my little girl grow every day.
I love movies/shopping/girly catch ups too

This is a great interview and Miss Filly has some amazing videos that are a must to watch. Enjoy the story……

Quick Bio on yourself…..
After I started competing in my first comps, Miss Filly was born, because I thought it sounded more girlie than my current nickname….Phil. I slowly worked out that I don’t or can’t always dance like everyone else, but I also realised that was ok. I don’t have a dance, gymnastics, Callisthenics or an anything background. I was a musician and so adapting to this new sporty lifestyle was the biggest change I made to my life.
Also the best decision EVER!

Pole Files Interview 33: Flying Laura Pole Dancer

The amazing Laura Martin AKA Flying Laura is our next interview. I have had the pleasure of spending a fair bit of time with Laura and she is not only an amazing pole dancer but a beautiful person. She is so inspiring and after spending over a week with her she reminded me to follow my heart and dreams. She is a great performer and instructor and I personally love her style it’s fast and fun.

Check out her website http://www.flyinglaura.com

Lets hear from Laura………

[youtube_sc url=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9SjLpyeOtU”]

How long have you been doing pole dancing?

12 years.

The moment you realised you love pole dancing?

The instant i saw a ballerina invert high up on a pole, i knew i wanted to do it. and to be the best! 🙂

Describe your style.

I have a lot of explosive power, and am very quick. transitions are what i am best at. i would call my style energetic, and heart centered, and daring.

Favorite move?

The flying laura of course ! i really don’t know if my name is more my style, or actual moves i have created… but its also known as leg switches, electric leg switch, body switching, ect. I have perfected this over doing it for most of my time as a pole dancer, nearly 12 years! and invented it with straight legged switching, its so fun to perform!

Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?

  1. fun, can’t live without the fun.

2. a song that i connect with on a deep level, VS. a song that i think others will like. its always has to come from an organic connection, and to trust that connection. it is so liberating this way.

Favorite pole dancing memory?

Man, there are SO many moments with my career that stand out. But the one that has made the biggest impact and momentum in my life is winning the american pole fitness championships. Everything from the training leading up to the competition, to the mental preparation of the performance, and actually living in the performance, and hearing my name called, which I was so wrapped up in being present and letting it all out on stage, that I wasn’t even concerned with the win. I was not expecting it, and quite frankly, it was a huge validating experience for me. I have been pole dancing for so long, and have competed and never won a title, so it was a huge day for me. I worked really hard too, so that day taught me a lot about believing in yourself and your dreams, because if you put in the work, they come true.

Any hobbies or passions outside of pole dancing?

Outside pole dancing, I would say my passions are good conversations with interesting people and great friends, reading, journaling, and letting my imagination run wild. Besides creating and people, and hanging out on the beach in the summer, I love experiencing culture, spirituality, helping others and nature from all over the world. This world is a really beautiful place if one is open to seeing it, and this is something I am grateful for.

[youtube_sc url=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpMJOqzp_lE”]

Can’t live without?

Spirit…i cant live with out it, because I would be nothing with out it. it is me, it is what drives me, it lives through me. No, I am not a religious person. Religion is different to me… the spirit I am referring to is that thing on the inside that inspires us to believe in more, I just look inside, and that has been my best guide. I would not be where I am now if not for it.

Growing up I wanted to be a…..

hahaha… well, what I wanted to be was a rockstar, but everyone else told me I couldn’t do that, but it didn’t matter, because I always ended up not listening, and doing what I wanted to anyway…  So, now, I get t

o perform, and I am SO grateful for that!

Favourite things of all time:

Movie:  from the 80’s…dirty dancing, and don’t mind watching the occasional dry or high brow humor. recently, saw “blueberry” known as “renegade” in the US.. really great cinematography and story.

TV Show: Frankly, I don’t watch TV… its a waste of my emotional and mental energy.

Musician: this is a tough one for me, because i am one of those people that appreciates music for what it is, and appreciate all its qualities… though, I will say one band that sticks out in my head is Tool. Others that stick out in my mind are legends like led zeppelin,  and michael jackson. However, I cant go without hip hop or soul, like Jurassic 5, john legend, marvin gaye, stevie wonder. But I love the new movement of more underground electronic genres like Bird of prey, phutureprimitive, bassnectar, to name a few.

song: well, I have one song, that I heard as little girl, it changed my life. its corny and old, but the message is beautiful. its called ” love song” by an 80’s rock band.. testla. I don’t know if I would call it a favorite, as much as a song with an endearing, sweet  memory. It warmed my heart with hope at a very young age.. i’ll never forget that.

Book: I love books! I especially seem to love self help books for artists, like “war of art” or “do the work” by steven pressfield, or “the artist way”, I also REALLY love the book ” the alchemist” by paulo coelho.. a book of following your heart and adventure, oooh, and i love reading poetry by the sufi poet rumi… especially ” the book of love”.

Magazine: I prefer online resources,

Food: I LOVE food!! I love green stuff, I love thai cuisine, I love fruits and veggies, and ooh, sweet potatoes !!  I am a predominately vegan, clean eater. I am very passionate about this, with the growing external costs of our way of life being so traumatic to our environment, I know food to be a great way to be an active part of eliminating on polluting the world, and our bodies. Please don’t mistake what I am saying as an extremist, I am not saying meat is bad for everyone, however, I do feel as our industries stand now, we have a lot of changing to do to become more in balance with our planet. Clean eating, and organic, is one strong and reachable way to be involved in our day to day lives.

Designer: I love having custom designs made for costumes, ideas, and any creative project i may have. I would love to be more in the fashion loop, guess thats on my to do list 🙂

Michelle Stanek Pole Files Rarrdesigns

Today’s Interview is with Michelle Stanek she is very well known in the Pole dance industry. Her styles in unique and fluid. I really enjoy watching Michelle perform she a a different way of capturing a audience.

So Let’s hear all about Michelle…….

Short bio…
Michelle Stanek grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania sneaking out of bedroom windows, camping and dancing. In college, she studied art history, business and dance. She went on to graduate school to earn her Master’s degree in art history. She abandoned dance to be an art history professor, program curator and tour guide in Italy. In 2008 she found pole dance. She became addicted and began to develop her own style, finally utilizing her dance background. In 2009 she was laid off. Although a shock, it allowed her to teach pole dance, train more, eventually enter and win 5 out of 6 competitions and make a full time career out of something she loves. When she is not traveling, Michelle lives in New York City and teaches at Body& Pole.

How long have you been doing pole dancing?

Michelle Stanek Pole Files Rarrdesigns

5 years

The moment you realised you love pole dancing?

NOT my first class. It took a while for me to love it. I think that happened about a year into it when I realized I had my own style. I could use my contemporary dance background with a subtle hint of sexy. At first, I think I was trying too hard to be like everyone else I was seeing in the pole world. And although I was having a great time whipping my hair, humping the floor and uncovering a wildly sexy part of me, my dancing felt contrived. When I stopped imitating and started moving the way I felt, then I started to soar.

Describe your style.

Not just traditional sexy. Not just traditional contemporary. But a unique blend of both.

Favorite move?

All flips, spins, leaps and handsprings with a Chinese grip. The Jade. Fast, explosive combos juxtaposed to slow, gooey combos. Floor work!
